Diluting Thieves Dish Soap

When I started switching out toxic products I was using to non-toxic products, one of the last products that even crossed my mind that might have chemicals in it was DISH SOAP. I don’t know why this didn’t occur to me. Maybe because I didn’t really think the dish soap was really touching my skin. But I definitely didn’t think about chemical residue from my dish soap staying on my plates and utensils and then me basically eating those chemicals when I would use said plates and utensils. ??‍♀️Gross.

The dish soap I have been using for the past 4 or so years is Thieves Dish Soap. And ya’ll Thieves Dish Soap works so great! I personally have found no difference in how well this soap works compared to other dish soaps that I would buy at Target in the past.

If you are accustomed to using something like Dawn dish soap, you are probably used to your dish soap foaming a lot. This is due to a chemical that is added (sodium lauryl sulfate), that is actually a known irritant and not great for your skin. (In this recipe, we will add some baking soda to help this all natural Thieves Dish Soap foam as well.)

Young Living Thieves Dish Soap costs $14 per bottle, if you are a wholesale member. So if you use this recipe, you will be able to make 3 bottles of dish soap that will average out to around $4.67/bottle, which is really reasonable for a truly natural and plant based dish soap. (If you watch the video below, you will find out that I cannot do math in my head ?)

For this dilution recipe you will need: Thieves Dish Soap, baking soda, water, Thieves Household Cleaner (optional), and Essential Oils (optional).

Recipe and Directions:

  • 1/3 of a bottle of Thieves Dish Soap (this = 4 oz.)
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • Optional: a squirt of Thieves Household Cleaner (definition of a “squirt” is less than a capful)
  • Optional: a few drops of essential oil if you want to add a different scent. I like 5-10 drops of Lemon. During Christmas time you could use “Christmas Spirit”. Other good options include: Citrus Fresh, Orange, or Peppermint.
  • Fill the rest of the way with lukewarm water – it mixes better if the water is a little warm. (PRO TIP: fill about halfway with warm water and shake to combine, then add the rest of the water and shake to combine. It can be difficult to shake/combine if you fill all the way at first. You may have to let the bubbles sit for a little while before you fill it up the rest of the way with water.)
  • Use as you normally would use dish soap. ??
