Laundry Scent Booster

Growing up, I started doing laundry for my whole family when I was probably around 10 years old. It’s always been something relatively relaxing for me and I’ve enjoyed doing. While I love doing laundry, putting it away takes 3-7 business days. ??‍♀️I’m even very controlling about how my clothes are folded. There is a right way to fold everything. Just ask my husband.

When I went to college and was doing my own laundry by myself, I was the queen of “smell good” laundry. I loved Tide laundry detergent and those Downy Unstopables scent booster crystal things. Just go google ingredients of Tide laundry detergent or ingredients of Downy Unstopables scent booster (hint Downy Unstopables only lists the ingredients: perfume dispersant, perfume, and dye). I’m not going to dive into it today, but “perfume” can be any combination of up to 3,000 different chemicals. ?Yikes.

I do still like for my clothes to smell good, but I prefer a more natural smell compared to a smell developed in a lab.

Side Note: Seriously, who got to decide what “Fresh” smelled like?!? And what the heck even is “April Fresh” or “Shimmer” as a scent?? Definitely not a flower or plant that grows somewhere in nature.

Today I make my own laundry scent booster.

You will need: epsom salt, baking soda, and essential oils! And a container of course. I use this type of mason jar.

Ingredients & Directions:

  • 1 1/2 cup Epsom Salt (will help keep clothes soft)
  • 1/2 cup baking soda (will help with holding in the scent of the essential oils)
  • 10-15 drops rosemary + 10-15 drops citrus fresh (you can mix these up! Other great options include Lavender, Peppermint, Purification – whatever you want your clothes to smell like)
  • Pour all ingredients together
  • SHAKE
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of mixture per load of laundry.
